Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling and Reiki

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese practice that holistically heals and benefits the body, mind, and spirit – it is based on energy healing. This alternative healing practice carries the belief that each person contains a “life-force energy” that corresponds to their wellness. Reiki treatment aims to bring the energy up high again.

What can I expect when booking a Distance Reiki session?

Before your online healing session, I recommend creating a completely calming space. Shut out all the noise and distractions of daily life and sink into your one-on-one session. I will also provide gentle music for you to listen to during the session, helping you to relax more deeply. When we start your session, I will ask you what you need and where you would like to focus. I will also scan your body and aura to sense where there may be blockages or areas that need attention. Throughout the session, you will be asked to lie down, fully clothed, with your eyes closed. This will create a calming atmosphere that allows you to relax completely. Reiki is non-invasive and is a relaxing treatment. As we are channelling distance healing, you will be notified when the healing has started and ended, with a chance to ask any questions you may have about the session at the end.

What can I expect during an in-person Reiki session?

You will lie on a comfortable bed, on your back, fully clothed for the duration of the session, listening to relaxing music. Sometimes I will ask you to turn onto your front. I will either place my hands gently on you or above you, in different positions, usually working from the head down towards your feet before grounding and calming

your energy at the end.

How will I feel during and after a Distance Reiki session or an in-person session?

After your Reiki session, it’s important to listen to your emotions and see how you feel. This can completely differ from person to person, and there is no wrong or right way to feel. During your treatment, it is not uncommon to drift off to sleep and feel at ease. Some people feel heat in some places, or tingling. It is not unusual to

feel emotions either during or after the session. Many people have expressed that afterwards they feel much lighter and overall happier. A Reiki healing session is a great way to regain a sense of clarity

and feel like a ‘weight has been lifted’. Reiki helps the body return to a state of relaxation and helps you to sleep much better. It is important to drink plenty of water after your session to support your body with the healing process. I will check in with you the following day to see how you are feeling.

How can counselling help?

The kind of issues clients bring covers a wide range. Any number of personal issues is a good reason to start counselling. You may come with feelings of low self-esteem. Perhaps you are struggling with coping with feelings of anger, shame, or loneliness. You may have experienced loss; perhaps for a person, job, place or role in life, or you may feel a sense of loss of dreams, hope or purpose. You may simply feel overwhelmed by your emotions and the pressures of life. Alternatively, you may find it difficult to experience or express any feelings at all. Trauma takes many forms: physical, mental, and emotional and counselling can help you make peace with the past and learn how to engage in your life. Counselling can also help you explore wider issues, such as finding your place in the world, deciding which path to take in life and give you support while you go through a time of difficult change.

Am I ready for counselling?

You may decide to see a counsellor for many different reasons. Perhaps you have reached a point where you feel you can no longer continue as you are and know that you need help to change. You may be at a turning point in your life and would like someone to help you sort through your thoughts and feelings. As a counsellor, my role is to help you explore options and find new ways of thinking and feeling.

Do you offer online counselling?

In addition to my private practice room, I offer online counselling via Zoom, a highly effective and convenient way of undergoing therapy from the comfort of your own home.

This will be my first experience of counselling. How many sessions do I need?

I normally advise my clients to commit to at a minimum of 6 sessions to give the therapeutic process time to be effective. There is an expectation that these sessions take place weekly, but we can discuss your requirements and availability.

What happens if I must cancel my counselling or Reiki session?

If you need to cancel, please give 48 hours’ notice; otherwise, you will be charged for the missed session.

Are counselling sessions confidential?

Everything that we discuss during your session is confidential. There may be an occasion to break confidentiality if I feel that you could be at risk to yourself or others. But this will be discussed with you. As part of my ongoing professional development, I might need to discuss your case with my supervisor. If so, this is bound by confidentiality.

What Mental Health Support packages do you offer?

NHS services can often be under strain, and you may find yourself on a long waiting list. Paying privately means you no longer have to wait and can invest in your own wellbeing. Together we will look at your history, current situation, any medication, and the professionals you are linked with, such as your GP, to find the support that best meets your needs.

If you have a Serious and Enduring Mental Health Illness (SMI), I will discuss with you the importance of contacting your Care Co-ordinator before we begin. This ensures your wellbeing remains the priority and that risks of relapse are carefully considered.

Get in touch

Ready to start? Book an appointment by calling 07882 201264 or using the contact form. I will get back to you within 24 hours to arrange an initial FREE 20-minute informal consultation.

I will talk you through my approach to counselling or how Reiki works and will ask you what brings you to Counselling or why you are seeking Reiki and what you want to achieve. If I feel I can help you and you want to work with me, we can arrange our first session.

First Session

This is an assessment session and different to the standard counselling session. It’s an opportunity for us to meet and see if we feel comfortable to work together. During this session, I will be asking more detailed questions about your history and your current situation. Counselling sessions that follow the assessment session will be led by you.
